About Arman Athwal

I am passionate about biomedical engineering research and vision science, and I specialize in imaging of the human eye. I am currently a PhD student at UCL in London, working jointly within the departments of Medical Physics and Biomedical Engineering (MPBE) and the Institute of Ophthalmology (IoO). I’m fortunate that my work involves substantial international collaboration. I consistently work with researchers at Vancouver’s Eye Care Centre and Australia’s Lions Eye Institute. My research goal is to develop multimodal imaging technologies to visualize the human eye in new ways, and to use those technologies to characterize the mechanisms behind disease-induced blindness - especially diabetic retinopathy. I’m also a junior pilot, having recently earned my private pilot’s license, and am hoping to combine flying with my interest in high altitude medicine and space medicine ‍ Otherwise, I can usually be found outside under the nighttime sky with my camera, occasionally writing science fiction, or messing about on the piano.
