Background

About Arnout Roukaerts

Trained in environmental and analytical chemistry and specialized in aquatic systems I’m fascinated by the interactions between chemistry, biology and physics. During my PhD I participated in several international field sampling campaigns in the North Atlantic and Southern Ocean and Antarctic sea ice. The aim was to help unravel the inner workings of the nutrients dynamics in these marine environments. The focus of my thesis was the potential role of a microbial biofilm can have on sea ice biogeochemistry. This new hypothesis helped us explain some of the very unusual nutrient dynamics that we observed in Antarctic sea ice. More recently I also gained interest in the use of electrodes and sensors and what they can mean for water quality more locally. With my work for Fluves I hope to contribute to more healthy river systems and create a better environment. In my free time I like to hike through old forests, do some fermentation experiments in the kitchen, repair old stuff or create something new. Want to discuss the beauty of the nitrogen cycle or you have a good recipe for sourdough bread? Feel free to contact me.
