About Aroob Memon

I am a PhD candidate in Economics at American University, Washington D.C.(ABD) driven by questions about how infrastructure shapes long-term development trajectories. My dissertation investigates the developmental impacts of colonial-era irrigation canals in India, combining historical data analysis with econometric methods to understand how large-scale public works fundamentally alter regional economies and social structures, and how institutional context shapes these developmental outcomes. As a Research Fellow at LUMS, I design curriculum for the Two Cultures Fellowship series—an initiative that reflects my conviction that our most pressing challenges demand interdisciplinary engagement. These programs convene scientists, engineers, economists, and humanists to address critical issues facing Pakistan, from water and energy systems to governance and social infrastructure. Creating intellectual spaces where diverse expertise converges is work I find deeply meaningful. My research bridges rigorous quantitative analysis with historical inquiry and institutional economics. As a Fulbright Scholar trained in development macroeconomics and applied econometrics, I am committed to scholarship that connects economic analysis to broader questions of institutional change and human development.
