About Art Kellermann

Dr. Kellermann is a nationally recognized leader in healthcare delivery, public health and health policy. At various points in his career he's served as an ER and EMS medical director, led a public health research center, was a clinical department chair, RAND analyst, medical school dean and most recently Senior Vice President for Health Sciences at Virginia Commonwealth University and CEO of the VCU Health System. He now advises state agencies, companies and organizations on developing a public health and healthcare workforce for the 21st century, high-value health technology, health equity, patient safety and health care costs. Prior to working for VCU, Dr. Kellermann served for 7 years as Professor and Dean of "America's Medical School"- the F. Edward Hébert School of Medicine at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences. USU is our nation's leadership academy for military medicine and public health. From 2010 - 2013, he held the Paul O’Neill-Alcoa Chair in Policy Analysis at RAND Corporation. Before that, he was professor and associate dean for health policy at the Emory School of Medicine in Atlanta. He founded Emory's Department of Emergency Medicine and served as its first chair. In 2006-2007 he took sabbatical leave to participate in the Robert Wood Johnson Health Policy Fellowship program. where he served on the Professional staff of the House Committee on Oversight and Government reform during the first year of the 110th Congress. He began his academic career at UT Memphis, where directed he ER of "the Med"- Memphis' public hospital and served at Co-medical director of Memphis Fire/EMS Bureau. In Memphis and at every subsequent stage of his career, he's made significant contributions to injury and violence prevention, emergency preparedness and health policy at the local, state and federal level. Elected to the National Academy of Medicine at age 45, Dr. Kellermann co-Chaired the IOM Committee on the Consequences of Uninsurance and played key roles on IOM Committees examining health promotion, emergency care, and biodefense. He's published more than 250 research papers, monographs and textbook chapters on various aspects of emergency care, public health preparedness, gun violence prevention and health policy. He holds career leadership awards from the American College of Emergency Physicians, the Society for Academic Emergency Medicine and the American Public Health Association. He is board certified in Emergency Medicine and Internal Medicine.
