About Arthur Marotti

Arthur F. Marotti is Distinguished Professor of English Emeritus at Wayne State, where he taught for forty years.He has also had visiting appointments at The Johns Hopkins University, The University of Michigan, and two Brazilian federal universities, Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina and Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais. He taught courses in early modern English literature and culture and has a special interest in lyric poetry, material textuality (especially poetry in manuscript) and sixteenth- and seventeenth-century English Catholic culture. He is the author of John Donne, Coterie Poet (University of Wisconsin Press, 1986); Manuscript, Print and the English Renaissance Lyric (Cornell University Press, 1995); Religious Ideology and Cultural Fantasy: Catholic and Anti-Catholic Discourses in Early Modern England (2005) and, with Steven W. May, Ink, Stink Bait, Revenge and Queen Elizabeth: A Yorkshire Yeoman's Household Book (2014). He has also edited or co-edited eight collections of scholarly essays. He served as the Editor of the journal Criticism from 1986-1996 and is a member of the Editorial Board of Literature Compass, British Catholic History, and JNL: Journal of the Northern Renaissance. He is the recipient of research fellowships from The John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation (1975-76), from The American Council of Learned Societies (1988-89), and (twice) from The National Endowment for the Humanities and 2005-6). In addition he has been co-P.I. on two federal grants (2002-7, 2007-10) from the Department of Education to fund bilateral exchanges of students and faculty with Brazilian universities.He is currently Director of the new Wayne State University Emeritus Academy.
