Background
About Arthur Remillard
I serve as Dean of the School of STEAM and Professor of Religious Studies at Saint Francis University. In this role, I work to empower faculty, staff, and students to create the best possible educational outcomes across a wide range of disciplines. My scholarship has centered on American religious history, with particular attention to religion and sports, religion in the American South, and civil religion(s). I am the author of Southern Civil Religions: Imagining the Good Society in the Post-Reconstruction Era, which received the 2012 Harry T. and Harriette V. Moore Award from the Florida Historical Society. I also co-edited Gods, Games, and Globalization with Rebecca Alpert (Mercer University Press, 2019). Most recently, my book Bodies in Motion: A Religious History of Sports in America was published by Oxford University Press in May 2025. In addition to my books, I have published in scholarly journals and edited volumes, while also contributing popular essays to outlets such as Christian Century, Christianity Today, the Marginalia Review of Books, Sojourners, and the Washington Post. I served for a decade as managing editor and book review editor of the Journal of Southern Religion and hosted an interview podcast for the Marginalia Review of Books from 2013 to 2016. My teaching spans a range of topics, including religion and sports, interfaith literacy and leadership, medical ethics, post-apocalyptic literature, the history of Christianity, and American religious history. Over the years, I have held several administrative roles, including Director of the Wolf-Kuhn Ethics Institute (2018–2022), Associate Director of Honors (2019–2024), and Chair of the Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies (2022–2024). Outside of my academic work, I enjoy spending time with my family and am an avid distance runner. While I once aspired to complete a marathon in all fifty states, my current goal is simply to run consistently and stay injury-free.
