About Arturo Ramirez

I believe science is magic—made real through creativity, careful design, and experimentation. I lead research at the intersection of optics and intelligence, where I’m currently developing an optical neural network. By integrating lasers I aim to create energy-efficient machine learning architectures that operate at the speed of light. This work brings together experimental photonics, deep learning, and physical modeling, supported by simulations and CNN training in Python/TensorFlow. Before this, I led a project investigating the linear and nonlinear optical properties of DNA suspensions, culminating in a first-author peer-reviewed publication. Using Z-scan techniques, UV–Vis spectroscopy, and laser exposure experiments, I demonstrated DNA’s viability as a biodegradable, nonlinear optical material. This interdisciplinary project combined biology, optics, and computation, and showcased DNA’s potential in photonic and optoelectronic devices. My foundation in materials science began with modeling 2D heterostructures using density functional theory (DFT) and VASP, where I analyzed band structures, charge distributions, and strain effects—building the groundwork for understanding nanoscale behavior from both quantum and classical perspectives. Across these roles, I’ve consistently led teams, coordinated across disciplines, and brought projects from concept to publication and presentation. I thrive at the intersection of physics, engineering, and biology, with a focus on designing robust, intelligent systems grounded in experimental insight.
