How do we perceive objects and events? How does the brain optimize our ability to detect and discriminate? How do we consciously control our sensations, and what goes awry when this ability is impaired and our perceptions are altered? To address these questions we study neurobiological mechanisms that control the perceptions of touch and pain. An underlying theme in our studies is an integrative approach focusing on cellular, network, optogenetic, computational and behavioral correlates of neuronal information processing. Perception is an active, dynamic process in which we consciously focus on salient features in our sensory space. The ability to actively and rapidly shift this sensory attention is essential for survival, as it is requisite for the organization, identification and interpretation of sensory information, allowing us to represent and understand our environment. Deficits in sensory attention underlie diverse conditions, including attention deficit disorders, autism spectrum disorders, schizophrenia and chronic pain.
