About Ash Heim
I am currently a postdoctoral researcher in biology education at Cornell University in the Department of Ecology & Evolutionary Biology. Working with Drs. Michelle Smith and Natasha Holmes, I have developed an assessment to measure undergraduates' critical thinking skills in ecology lab and field courses known as the Biology Lab Inventory of Critical Thinking in Ecology (Eco-BLIC). During my postdoctoral experience, I also taught the non-majors evolution course at Cornell in Fall 2021. Broadly, my research interests include understanding how biology undergraduates critically think in lab and field courses; how biology undergraduates learn at informal settings like zoos; how learner-centeredness manifests in STEM classrooms; how and why instructors use open-source pedagogical materials; how undergraduates form networks in physics classrooms; and how diversity and equity can be improved in biology classrooms, among many others!
