About Ashim Khanal

With over 5 years of experience in operations research, optimization, and machine learning, I bring a strong foundation in solving complex, large-scale problems. My expertise spans multi-objective optimization, multiplicative programming, data mining and analytics, machine learning, and deep reinforcement learning. I have collaborated on impactful, interdisciplinary projects funded by organizations like the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, contributing to sustainability, equity, and fairness. My research includes the development of innovative solution methods for multi-objective optimization and multiplicative programming, with applications in game theory, environmental conservation, system reliability, and more. I created the Python package AquaNutriOpt, an optimization and smart decision-making tool for nutrient optimization in eutrophic lakes, widely recognized for its impact on Lake Okeechobee management. I have extensive experience developing and implementing custom Python packages and GUIs for mathematical optimization models, including mixed-integer linear programs, combinatorial network flow optimization, and multi-objective optimization. These models utilize heuristic and exact methods to tackle complex challenges. Moreover, applied machine learning and analytics are used in these tools to enhance the decision-making processes. Before beginning my Ph.D. program, I gained over a year of professional experience in Total Productive Maintenance and Supply Chain Planning within the consumer goods industry, further enhancing my analytical and project management skills.
