About Ashley Capitan

As a COOP student in high school, I volunteered at Providence healthcare in the outpatient department, where I primarily assisted with clerical and administrative duties. In addition, I spent three years as a peer leader at St. Joan of Arc Catholic Academy, collaborating with Catholic Cross-cultural Services. During that time, we established programs specifically for immigrant students. While still in high school, I had my first job working at McDonald's Canada. I was able to continue working there through my second year of nursing school. When I was in my first year of nursing school, I also began working as a Laboratory Assistant at George Brown College's Nursing Simulation Laboratory. These were my volunteer and work experiences before becoming a clinical extern at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre. My experience as a Sunnybrook Clinical Extern has equipped me with the skills necessary to provide quality care to every client effectively. I am primarily responsible for answering call bells, taking vital signs and assisting clients with their activities of daily living. I observed a variety of nursing skills, including wound care treatment, catheterization, and chest tube care. I honed my critical thinking abilities by responding to urgent situations, such as when a client's vital signs are unstable and reporting it to the nurse. I am also able to see how a rapid response team operates. Finally, working in this area introduced me to various specializations such as stroke care and other specialties including plastics, oncology and gynecology. I am now a new graduate nurse from Toronto Metropolitan University. I have previous clinical experiences at Copernicus Lodge (long-term care), Donway Place – Revera living (retirement home) and St. Michael's Hospital – general medicine department. I also did my final year-long placement at Humber River Hospital 6E ICU. With these clinical experiences, I believe I have an eagerness to provide quality care to patients of all ages.
