Background
About Ashley Townsend
Scientist, Director, non Executive Director. Possessing a unique skill set in the Tasmania community having served in senior professional and volunteer roles in areas of science, research, higher education, and directorship/governance. Community focused and am currently co-Director of the University of Tasmania’s Central Science Laboratory alongside my specialist role as a senior instrumental analytical scientist. A PhD graduate, I possess deep scientific expertise and technical knowledge developed over 30+ years of active research experience. I am a recognised global expert in the dual fields of trace element analysis and environmental assessment. Working as part of multi-disciplinary teams I have helped local and national researchers deepen our understanding of Tasmanian, Southern Ocean, and Antarctic environments. In parallel I possess a passion and aptitude for organisational governance, particularly in the science and higher education spheres, having served across numerous senior roles for the Royal Australian Chemical Institute (Executive/Board Of Directors/Board Deputy Chair, and the University of Tasmania (Council Member 2023-24; Academic Senate 2008-19; Audit and Risk Committee, 2023; Ceremonial and Honorary Degrees Committee, 2008; University Foundation Board and Committee, 2017; University Alumni Committee, 2004-2016 (inc. multiple terms as Chair, 2011-2016)). This service has been supported through substantial professional development and accreditation, primarily through the Australian Institute of Company Directors.A respected and trusted leader, my insightful analytical thinking coupled alongside my proven governance experience has provided me with desirable skills and abilities, including the capability to digest and synthesize complex information, curiosity to investigate issues and scenarios, and the ability to understand issues at both the detailed and “big picture” levels. I have demonstrated proficiency to lead as well as to work constructively as a member of senior management and executive teams.I would welcome opportunity to apply my leadership and director experience more broadly to better serve my community, including in the not-for-profit sector.
