About Ashton Towell

I am currently working as a civil engineer on the road and highway team at AtkinsRéalis. Before starting my full-time role in July 2024, I worked as an intern for Atkins during the summer of 2023 and the spring 2024 semester. I have been able to work on several exciting projects throughout Texas on roadways such as DNT, IH-45, and Loop 1604. I have gained experience with applications such as ORD, Bluebeam, and ProjectWise and have gained experience with drawing cross sections, pavement improvement sheets, and working with ROW acquisition. During my time here I hope to develop my skills as an engineer that is building a better future.I studied civil engineering at Abilene Christian University (ACU), class of 2024. In 2022, I became an Intern Engineering Support Tech at the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) where I gained experience in transportation engineering. During this internship I used MicroStation, Excel, Google Earth, and TxDOT's statewide planning map as well as other TxDOT resources to complete tasks such as developing a strip map based on a speed study and measuring and calculating the cost of lane striping. Additionally, I had the opportunity to visit several sights to check on concrete pouring, striping crews, and set up intersection studies. For the 3 years before interning at TxDOT, I interned at ACU's Nuclear Energy eXperimental Testing (NEXT) Lab. Much of my work involved Computer Aided Design (CAD) models and drawings of new components such as flanges; sending the approved drawings to manufacturers; and testing the manufactured parts for use in the NEXT Lab's soon to be full scale nuclear research reactor.As the president of ACU's ASCE chapter and as a member of the Engineering and Physics Ambassadors program, I grew leadership and social skills, as well as connecting with professional engineers such as business owners, alumni, and professors.
