About Astrid Seme

I am an independent graphic designer from Graz (AT), based in Vienna. Rooted within the fields of graphic design and typography my studio works in scopes such as art direction, editorial design, visual identities, books and other printed matter, e-books, websites and editorial projects. With regard to the content my work is based on individual research, concept and the economical means of production. Talks include: Typojanchi International Typography Biennial (Seoul), Kasseler Kunstverein (DE), Print Room (Rotterdam), Hochschule für Gestaltung Luzern (CH), Luca School of Arts (Brussels), Salon für Kunstbuch (Vienna) Contributions and features in: GRAPHIC (KR), idea Magazine (JP), Design Hub Museum Barcelona (ES), umool umool (NL/KR), Grafikdesign in Österreich (Triest, CH) among others. I’m co-partner of Mark Pezinger Verlag, a publishing house and exhibition-platform for artists’ books. Involved in the process of improvisation, consulting, editing, copy-editing, manufacturing, design, printing, binding,(self) publishing, distributing (in contact with book shops and art book fairs) curating and exhibition making. Mark Pezinger Verlag exhibitions include: Pioneer Works (New York), WIELS Contemporary Art Center (Brussels), FRAC (Marseille), Kunsthalle Sankt Gallen (CH), Kasseler Kunstverein and Kunstverein Freiburg (DE) among others. Coming from graphic design I also have a high interest in the written and the spoken word and the relationship of both. This results in sound works depending upon one of the fundamental questions of typography: the relationship between the visual representation or notation and their spoken words. Exhibitions in institutions and festivals such as: Electric Eclectics Festival of experimental music and sound art (Ontario), Typojanchi (Seoul), Beursschouwburg (Brussels), Museo del arte contemporaneo (Santiago de Chile), Tonspur (Berlin), Museumsquartier (Vienna)
