About Asunaro Sugimoto

I currently work at Fermelanta, a Japan-based biotech startup that harnesses microbial fermentation to produce plant-derived bioactive compounds for pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, and supplements. Our team made a world-first breakthrough by successfully synthesizing complex alkaloids—valuable drug discovery leads—using engineered bacteria. At Fermelanta, I’m involved in driving the development and commercialization of novel biosynthetic pathways, working at the intersection of R&D, regulatory strategy, and global partnerships. My role focuses on translating cutting-edge science into real-world impact, with an emphasis on scalability, compliance, and sustainability. With a background as a Chief Scientist in the medical cannabis industry, I bring over 10 years of experience in plant science, precision cultivation, and product development. My passion lies in building bridges between biology and business—advancing technologies that make a measurable difference in human health and environmental resilience.
