About Asya Bernal

I am a current student at the University of San Francisco, majoring in Sociology and double minoring in Cultural Anthropology and Gender & Sexualities Studies.As a second-generation American and the child of a Vietnamese refugee, I have always possessed a complex outlook on the world around me, pushing me to attempt to understand how society shapes our experiences. Sociology satiated this desire to know how the world around me worked and propelled me to question the intricacies of life that seem inherent. Currently, I am working on a senior thesis looking at how access to fan communities through new forms of social media influences adolescents' sexual socialization. My main sociological interests include participatory culture, media’s influence on society, online culture, gender/sexuality studies, adolescent development, and fan studies. With my experience as a research assistant for the Sleep and Social Experiences study at the University of California, San Francisco, I am interested in pursuing a career in sociological research. Having garnered experience with qualitative and quantitative research and extensive experience in creating research studies, I hope to continue my education in sociology at the graduate level to further my knowledge of sociological research.
