About Athena Scaperdas

I am a Chartered Mechanical Engineer (MIMechE), with over 20 years’ experience in technical consultancy and engineering management in offshore Oil & Gas and helicopter aviation, and more recently in offshore wind consultancy. I have been trusted to lead complex technical studies, safety cases, regulatory approvals, stakeholder consultations, safety and technical audits, and technical due diligence assessments for clients in the UK and internationally. Project highlights include: • Project management support to a major Floating Offshore Wind (FOW) Portfolio in Italy (Acciona Energia) and Engineering Management support for INTOG projects Green Volt and CENOS (Flotation Energy). Reviews of Technical Due Diligence (TDD) reports in support of M&A and financing activities. • Leading a major research program for the UK Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) developing and implementing upgrades to the Helideck Monitoring System (HMS) for floating helidecks (as mandated in CAP437). Carried out complex helicopter stability and operability modelling, risk assessments, operability assessments and incident investigations. • Independent Competent Person (ICP) certified by the CAA, carrying out audits and facilitating the successful roll out of the HMS in 2021 in the UK and globally. Awarded the Royal Aeronautical Society Written Paper Prize Silver Medal in 2020 for this work. • Expert review of helicopter landing loads and design criteria for fixed and moving offshore helidecks, based on CAP437, NORSOK, ICAO criteria and prior assessments by Consultavia. This review was carried at the request of stakeholders, to assess the feasibility of landing a modern large SAR helicopter on a helideck designed for an older, smaller type. • Project and Client Relationship Manager for NCOC Kashagan, coordinating a multi-disciplinary team of up to 30 technical safety and risk experts and managing the client relationship. Responsible for resolving Kazakh local content and taxation legislation issues, and other contractual matters. Championed the development of in-house software analysis tools to improve the accuracy and efficiency of Quantified Risk Assessment (QRA) calculations, and to manage client input and output data. • Wind engineering and gas dispersion studies for several high-profile Oil & Gas, aviation, and major urban infrastructure projects (including the London 2012 Olympic Stadium, Changi and Heathrow Airports).
