Background

About Atsuhide Ito

In my art practice, I am using environmental data, especially air pollution and ionizing radiation data to develop kinetic installations. My key areas of research concerns aeropolitics (the politics of air and poetics of breathing), and the nuclear Anthropocene. Despite their invisibility, ionizing radiation and air pollution affect health of humans along with other non-human persons. Contrary to the tendency of art to focus on the visible, I am interested in responding to the imperceptible form of violence. In my art practice, currently I am deploying environmental data as a key agent in producing installations. I also incorporate running as a way to collect environmental data. As a writer, my most recent publications are “Translating Slow Violence: The Use of Environmental Data in Art as Un- Forecasting” in Acoustic and Visual Ecology of Damaged Planet, Special Issue of AM Journal of Art and Media Studies, 2021,"Semantics of Cleanliness" in Elena V. Shabiy, Martha J. Crawford and Dmitry Kurochikin (eds.) Energy Justice, Palgrave Macmillan 2022 and “Hauntology of the Machinic” in Steven John Thompson (ed.) Machine Law, Ethics and Morality in the Age of Artificial Intelligence, 2021,"Aerocide: Asphyxial Politics", Academia Edu. Letter (2021). Another book chapter “Aeropolitics” concerning the management of air and control of breathing is being developed for a publication as part of Routledge Critical Perspectives on Breath and Breathing, and yet another “Plutopian Memory Lines” will be published in 2024. The most recent exhibitions include Plume, Black Rain, Snow in the Tropics at the Musée d'art Contemporain Baie-Saint-Pauyl, CanadaFully Awake, a survey of research in painting, Manchester, England, and at Kösk in Munich, Germany.
