About Attila Hertel

Everyone's professional path is unique, even if two individuals end up in the same career. You could say I was born an engineer. Growing up, my favourite toys had elements of City planning and design. From building the latest lego set to pushing matchbox cars along my city road network print carpet, I've always enjoyed contributing to the way we live, work, and play. Transitioning into adolescence it became clear my forte was math and physics, key elements of a strong engineer. I enrolled in the enriched math and sciences program at Northview Heights Secondary School, which prepared me well for Civil Engineering life at the University of Waterloo. In my fourth and final year, Dr. Tighe approached me with an opportunity to complete a Master Degree under her supervision. I had always envisioned post-graduate education, and Dr. Tighe being a top 40 under 40 in Canada member and well connected within her industry, presented an unparalleled opportunity that I graciously accepted. I now have 10 years of experience as a transportation engineer at IBI Group, and my passion to meaningfully contribute to society has not dimmed. A personal favourite project has been CafeTO, where I had the opportunity to contribute to Toronto's enjoyment of patio season during the COVD-19 pandemic. My roll was to evaluate the restaurant applications, identify the one's that qualified, review the café closure plans, and consult with BIA representatives. I'd always have a smile on my face walking down Yonge Street seeing Torontonians having a blast in cafes I contributed to. Outside of my professional life, my interests lie in maintaining a healthy life style. I enjoy cooking my own meals and staying active through sports, activities, and my home gym. I also enjoy spending time with family and friends. I'm a firm believer that any activity can fun, if you're with a good group of people.
