Background

About Atze Dijkstra

Atze Dijkstra was born in Groningen, on 19 November 1954. He studied civil engineering at the Delft University of Technology (DUT). He worked as a researcher at the Transportation and Traffic Engineering Section of the Faculty of Civil Engineering. In 1983 he joined the SWOV Institute for Road Safety Research as a researcher. From 1996 to 1998 he was the project manager of several work packages in European research projects regarding bicycle and pedestrian facilities and regarding the design of road infrastructure. He set up the national course for road safety auditors; a course that has been presented every year since 2001. From to 2003 he was the manager of the research programme 'Road design and road safety'. Within this programme he set up and supervised the evaluation of the newly built 60 km/h zones. In this period, Atze was a member of a number of national working groups (CROW) on various geometrical and related subjects. At the end of 2003 Atze started working on the project 'Route choice in a road network' which resulted in his PhD thesis (2011). From 2011 until 2015 he worked on an evaluation of road design manuals, microsimulation of traffic conflicts, analyses of road designs, and tools for retrieving safety performance indicators. In 2014 he evaluated the road safety audits and road safety inspections which were conducted for motorways. Nowadays he works on the safe system approach, a revision of existing safety performance indicators, and the safety of older cyclists, in particular their route choice. In 2016/2017 he participated in an impact assessment regarding the revision of two EU directives (Road Infrastructure Safety Management and Safety Requirements for Road Tunnels) as well as in the compilation of the CycleRAP method. In 2017-2018 he participated in an international project regarding stimulating safe cycling and walking. Nowadays he is a traficologist at SWOV.
