About Audra Brown

I am currently earning a second master's degree in marriage and family therapy with a specialization in LGBTQIA+ studies at Pacific Oaks College. I am proud to be part of the first on-ground MFT program that offers a specialization in LGBTQIA+ studies in the country and privileged to receive an education entrenched in social justice narratives by and for the queer community. The knowledge I am gaining from this program allows me to examine queer historical trauma and deconstruct systems and narratives that harm the LGBTQIA+ community. Most importantly, it reinforces my fierce advocacy for my community and acknowledges the critical role mental health plays in dismantling systems of oppression that create barriers for the LGBTQIA+ community. During my time as an academic counselor at Citrus College I have gained practical skills that directly relate to my future role as a marriage and family therapy trainee. In my day to day work, I help students meet their educational goals by actively listening to their needs, working together to create efficient schedules, and providing resources that contribute to their success as a student. Lastly, my experience as an educational instructor has prepared me to organize and facilitate group methods of discussion and collaborative understanding. Returning to school for marriage and family therapy, I recognize the immense need for inclusive and non-judgmental therapists specializing in LGBTQIA+ families and their subcultures and it has motivated me to play an integral role in helping to heal my beloved community.
