About Audrey Wong

I have been teaching arts management and cultural policy for more than 10 years in Singapore and am programme leader of LASALLE College of the Arts' MA in Arts and Cultural Leadership. Before moving into lecturing and academia, I was Artistic Co-director (with Lee Weng Choy) of independent arts centre The Substation, which was founded by the late dramatist Kuo Pao Kun. There, I produced and presented projects across the visual and performing arts, organised festivals and international arts exchanges, and launched the Associate Artists programme. In 1997, I set up the Moving Images Film Programme at The Substation - the first regular, year-round platform in Singapore for local and Asian independent filmmakers. I've served on the boards of the Singapore Art Museum and National Arts Council, as well as the national-level Arts and Culture Strategic Review Committee (2010-12). Currently, I'm happily serving on the board of Nine Years Theatre. I'm also known as the first "Arts NMP", speaking for the arts as a Nominated Member of Parliament from 2009 - 2011. In 2013 I was a recipient of the NAC’s Cultural Fellowship and undertook research on capacity-building for young arts managers, an area that's close to my heart as I'm an arts educator. My research interests are in Singapore cultural policy, Southeast Asia non-profit arts, and community leadership in the arts. I have contributed chapters to The State and the Arts in Singapore: Policies and Institutions edited by Dr Terence Chong and The Routledge Companion to Arts Management edited by William Byrnes and Aleksandar Brkic.
