Background
About August Currier
I am a bit of a nomad, both in where I live and in my professional interests, as many twenty-something-year-olds claim to be. Home for me is the Commonwealth of Virginia. I'm interested in international affairs, public policy, sustainable agriculture, and documentary filmmaking. I was born and raised in rural Virginia until the age of fourteen. From there, I went on to spend three years at St. George's School in Rhode Island. The contrast of my small town, with a population of 300, to a New England boarding school was just the beginning. I pushed myself again by studying in the medieval town of Viterbo, Italy. Here, living with a host family and immersing myself in a completely unfamiliar culture, my fascination with international affairs began. Returning to the United States after my junior year of high school abroad, I applied to the most globally-oriented school I could find: New York University.Since starting college, I have pushed myself to take advantage of everything NYU has to offer, as well as the opportunities that come with studying in the city. I have been able to take classes with leading professors, such as Bruce Bueno de Mesquita, who was instrumental in developing my understanding of international affairs. I've also chosen to pursue my lifelong interest in filmmaking through a minor in documentary film—a bit of a passion project, but that is what college is for! Outside the classroom, New York has been an incredible place to begin my adult years. The friends, experiences, opportunities, and connections are sincere and lasting. That said, it would be a mistake not to spend time abroad, so I chose to study in Madrid for the entirety of my junior year.My professional experience began with coaching youth dinghy sailors in the Hudson Valley. My love for competitive sailing taught me so much both on and off the water: team coordination, navigation of relationships, preparedness for any situation, and that there are always multiple ways to a successful outcome. I passed down these valuable skills to young sailors training on the Hudson and racing throughout New England. After my summers on the water, I returned to Virginia to work for The Scout Guide and Kinloch Farm. I've enjoyed reconnecting with Virginia's Piedmont and working to share its story through mission-driven marketing and advertising. Now, I await my next professional adventure, possibly in a new location and a new field. I am a bit of a nomad, after all….
