About Austen Sperry

Ever since childhood, I've loved building-themed toys (and what young boy doesn't?). Whether it was blocks, Tinker Toys, Lincoln Logs, K'nex, Construx, Steel Tec, or Legos, I've found endless hours of bliss in dreaming up the world of possibilities that I could make with what was in front of me, and in bringing these possibilities to life! Especially, that is, when in 6th grade a friend of mine introduced me to Lego Mindstorms. It had everything! Worm gears, bevel gears, axles, plates, beams, treads, strings, and sensors, and could even be remote controlled! It was an inventor's paradise! I spent hours upon hours sifting through bins of parts to bring to life the claw bots, zip line bots, and of course, battle bots that swirled about in my imagination. If I could make a bot that was rugged and sturdy, or find a simple solution to a complex problem, or best of all make a working design that was novel and weird, I was happy. And since that time, I've wanted to be an engineer. Fortunately, my love for creating hasn't aged a day! As I've gotten older I've made spud guns, model rockets, paintball shelters, tire targets, stun gloves, and I've even attempted some unique modifications to my paintball guns as well. I've sketched out designs I've wanted to make and played with formulas I learned in Physics, Calculus, and Dynamics to try to apply them. I eventually used some of the logic I gleaned from Intro to C and Prob/Stats to code my own video games. I try to bring out the fun, imaginative side of everything I do, and I love wracking my brain for unique solutions that haven't been tried yet.
