About Austin Nelson
I studied the structural and functional characterization of AAVs (Adeno-associated viruses). My research was at UF in the McKnight Brain Institute under Dr. Robert McKenna and Dr. Mario Mietzsch. As a masters student, I worked with porcine, mouse and rat AAVs. From synthesizing the plasmids, to production, purification, infectivity/glycan binding assays, dot blots against human antibodies, and solving the capsid structures using cryo-em. As a tech, I worked on single amino acid mutations in AAV9 vector to improve infectivity and antibody escape. I also was involved in the synthesis and production of a VP3 only variant of AAV1 to be used as a bench-top standard.
