About Austin Phoenix

Dr. Phoenix is an expert in morphing systems and has worked on dynamic traveling wave excitations, morphing waveriders, wave propagation, high precision morphing, and thermal morphing systems. Dr. Phoenix got his BS and his Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from Virginia Tech under Dr. Pablo Tarazaga with a dissertation titled “High Precision Thermal Morphing of the Smart Anisogrid Structure for Space-Based Applications.” Dr. Phoenix has been a member of the Naval Research Laboratory Space Structural Analysis group for nine years, performing as a lead analyst and test director for multiple spaceflight programs. Dr. Phoenix completed a Karle Fellowship, where he studied large space structures and morphing space systems as well as performing as a lead analyst and test director for the IFPA FH program. He has been working with DARPA as an SME on several hypersonic DARPA programs and a PI on multiple research efforts. He is the author and/or co-author of 10+ journal papers and 20+ total papers with one awarded and four provisional patents. His research interests include Morphing Smart Structures, Hypersonic Structures, Morphing Aerospace Systems, Multiobjective Optimization, Traveling Wave Dynamics and Modeling, Model Reduction, Model Correlation, and Parameter Ranking.
