About Austin Ratner

Austin Ratner is author of four books of fiction and non-fiction, among them the novel THE JUMP ARTIST, 2011 winner of the Rohr Prize for Jewish Literature. THE JUMP ARTIST was praised as “a remarkable work” by Harper’s Magazine and featured in Publishers Weekly in 2009 as one of ten promising debuts. His non-fiction has appeared in The New York Times Magazine, The Wall Street Journal, USA Today and many other places, and his short fiction has been honored with the Missouri Review Editors’ Prize in Fiction. He attended the University of Iowa Writers’ Workshop. In 2017, the New York Times Magazine named his essay "Sidewalk Phantom" one of its 16 all-time best Lives columns. Before turning his focus to writing he received his M.D. from the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine and he is author of the 2019 non-fiction work THE PSYCHOANALYST'S AVERSION TO PROOF, which psychoanalyst Mark Solms has said "could help determine the future direction of American psychiatry and mental science." He is Editor in Chief of the THE AMERICAN PSYCHOANALYST (TAP), the magazine of the American Psychoanalytic Association. He grew up in Cleveland, Ohio, now lives in Brooklyn, New York. He is married and a father of two boys.
