About Ava Avalos
Originally from San Diego, California, for the last 19 years, Dr. Ava Avalos has worked as a HIV/TB specialist physician and AIDS activist in Africa. In addition to clinical care, she focuses her medical research on optimizing anti-retroviral treatment for HIV/AIDS patients, preventing both ART failure and the development of drug resistance, as well as improving the implementation of public health programs in Botswana. She is a member of the Botswana HIV & TB Clinical Care Guidelines Committee, a Research Associate of the Botswana Harvard AIDS Institute Initiative, serves as Vice-chair on the Board of the International Treatment Preparedness Coalition (ITPC) and was recently appointed to the Editorial Board of the Southern African Journal of HIV Medicine. In 2018, she was ordained as a Dharma Teacher in the tradition of Zen Master Thich Nhat Hanh. She also keeps up with two high spirited smooth haired fox terriers, paints and teaches yoga and dance.
