My philosophy of teaching is that children learn when they are encouraged and supported. I came to this realization my first-year teaching and yes this is just my second year, however, I love and accept students wherever they are at, and then support them in getting to where they need to be. It’s that simple. First, I need to explicitly ensure that students know I accept them for who they are. But why? Why does a student need love and acceptance? It seems like such a “warm fuzzy” term, but it is actually based in educational research. Students that feel nurtured have better outcomes. Second, any teacher will tell you that one of the most important things one can do to have a successful classroom is to build relationships with your students. Emotions directly influence learning and memory processes. If a teacher has a poor rapport with a student, that student’s limbic system will be shut down and they will not be open to learning. Lastly, I take several explicit steps in my classes to ensure that students know that they are accepted and that I will support them no matter where they are in their journey of education.
