Background
About Ava Ratliff
I am currently a fourth year pharmacy student at Virginia Commonwealth University. Upon graduation from James Madison University, I received a Bachelor of Science with a Health Sciences major. The pharmacy field piqued my interest when the cardiology pharmacist was attending to my grandfather’s complex medical needs. The interpersonal relationship formed between them while at the hospital was inspiring. I hope to one day provide both medical and emotional support for patients. While an undergraduate, volunteer work was a priority. Giving back helps reinforce my desire for healthcare. The Salvation Army Homeless Shelter provided exposure to many diverse situations and populations. While in pharmacy school, I volunteered at a free clinic. Most of the patients were Spanish speaking. I was able to learn how to properly involve an interpreter in visits, while also developing skills for on-boarding. Vitals obtained included blood pressures, weight, A1c’s, and blood glucose levels. This experience allowed for me to investigate root causes of patient problems, while also coming up with a solution. It was amazing to apply what is learned in class to real life situations. I enjoyed investigation of complex issues that promote critical thinking skills. This led to my participation in the McFarlane Scholars Research Program. High risk medication use prevalence amongst geriatric populations, along with entry errors within the electronic system, were explored. I also completed a literature review on how different medication adherence scales/questionnaires can affect patient reporting’s. It’s important to look at even the small details when compiling data to extrapolate for possible solutions. I also like to think of options that aren’t so obvious to allow for a broader view of resources. I feel all these individual experiences helped shape me into the person I am today.
