As a linguist - who can speak English, Portuguese, Spanish, and Cape Verdean Creole in varying degrees of fluency - I know this as well as any. So many misunderstandings occur within and across linguistic barriers that conflict and contention seem endless. I understand this and wish nothing more than to use my skills (some of which are listed below) to bring the world a little bit closer together. By teaching younger generations to communicate in foreign languages, translating written works and documents, and collaborating with other cultures we can see the differences between us start to disappear. It becomes possible to see the world through a new lens that engenders understanding and learning from other viewpoints, rather than assuming and blaming others. A world where we all are willing to communicate with and learn from each other is the world that I would like to help create- Advanced Level Portuguese Reading, Writing, and Speaking (All formally tested)- Conversational Spanish - Mentoring (due to 1.5 years as a Peer Mentor at BYU)- Coaching (due to 4 years as a private swim coach)- Teaching (individuals and large groups)
