Background

About Ayoub Traverson

Until recently, my research focused on Metal-Organic Frameworks (MOFs), particularly on the process of amorphization of these structures. I was exploring how the loss of order could be an asset for various applications. This is why it might seem surprising that my PhD is oriented towards heritage materials. How did I go from MOFs to Henri Matisse's cut-out gouaches? In reality, I have always been driven by a desire to explore and characterize innovative materials. Alongside my research on both amorphous and non-amorphous MOFs, I developed an increasing interest in the conservation and restoration of artworks. It was during an optional cross-disciplinary training that I met my current PhD advisors, Victor Gonzalez and Loïc Bertrand, and it was there that my desire to contribute to research on heritage materials took shape. Together, we built a project that combines my knowledge of nanoporous structures with my eagerness to collaborate with people outside the materials science field. This is where my true passion for heritage sciences lies—they have the incredible ability to bring together people from very different backgrounds around a common object. I am fortunate to be working in collaboration with members of the Art Graphique Cabinet at the Centre Pompidou to study the physico-chemical alteration processes occurring in Henri Matisse's cut-out gouaches. Alongside my research, a growing concern has led me to reflect on the role of science in society, especially among younger generations. In the face of their growing disinterest in science, I became passionate about knowledge transfer. As part of this, I am currently teaching at the IUT, where I have the pleasure of supervising lab sessions for second-year students. I am also in the process of exploring new channels for science dissemination (creating workshops for young people, exploring the connection between theater and science, developing a podcast, etc.).
