About Babette Pluim

Prof. Babette Pluim, MD, MPH, PhD, FFSEM (IE), FFSEM (UK) is a Consultant in Sports and Exercise Medicine and has served as Chief Medical Officer of the Royal Netherlands Lawn Tennis Association (KNLTB) since 1990. She also acts as Tournament Physician at ATP and WTA events in ’s-Hertogenbosch and Rotterdam, and as Team Physician for the Dutch Davis Cup and Billie Jean King Cup teams.Since 2018, Prof. Pluim has been an Extraordinary Professor of Sports Medicine at the University of Pretoria (South Africa). She is affiliated with the IOC Research Centre of Excellence in Amsterdam and works as a Medical Consultant to the ATP Tour. Since 2020, she has served as Medical and Research Consultant in Wheelchair Tennis for the International Tennis Federation (ITF), chairs the ITF Classification Science Advisory Group, and is a member of both the ITF Sport Science and Medicine Commission (since 2002) and the ATP Medical Services Committee (since 2020).Prof. Pluim has held several international leadership and editorial roles. She was Sports Medicine Editor of the British Journal of Sports Medicine (2008–2020), and previously served as editor for Geneeskunde en Sport and the Journal of Medicine and Science in Tennis. From 2005 to 2013, she was a member of the WADA Health, Medical and Research Committee. She is an honorary member of the Swedish Society for Physical Activity and Sports Medicine (SFAIM) and a Member of Merit of the Dutch Sports Medicine Association (VSG).She holds a PhD on The Athlete’s Heart from Leiden University and a Master’s degree in Public Health from the University of Liverpool. Prof. Pluim has authored more than 95 peer-reviewed publications and has contributed to multiple IOC and sport-specific consensus statements, including the tennis-specific extension of the IOC consensus on injury and illness surveillance. She co-authored From Breakpoint to Advantage: A Practical Guide for Optimal Tennis Health and Performance, as well as the Dutch edition Ace or Brace – A Handbook for Healthy Tennis.
