Joseph Brendan (Bren) Baker, MS, serves as the Director of Engagement & Experience for the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP), Board of Certification (BOC), where he spearheads innovative strategies to enhance engagement with constituents and stakeholders. In this capacity, Joseph drives the promotion of ASCP BOC credentialing, amplifies the organization’s brand experience, and champions initiatives that underscore the value of ASCP BOC credentials in the medical laboratory community. He also oversees the ASCP BOC’s social media presence and e-communications, ensuring impactful and cohesive outreach across digital platforms. Joseph brings a distinguished career in public policy and cultural affairs to his role. As Assistant Director of International & Cultural Affairs in the Indianapolis Mayor’s Office (2008–2011), he co-led the city’s international strategy, fostering cross-cultural partnerships and advancing the Mayor’s global agenda. Prior to that, he served as Policy Director for the Indiana State Department of Health’s Office of Minority Health (2006–2008), where he authored comprehensive minority health status reports for the state and specialized in minority health epidemiology. An accomplished scholar and communicator, Joseph holds degrees in quantitative historical analysis and communication from Purdue University (BA) and Illinois State University (MS). His academic pursuits have delved into areas such as Yersinia pestis in medieval Europe and the socioeconomic impact of chronic diseases among Indigenous American populations. Before relocating to Chicago, Joseph was a reporter for The Pantagraph in Bloomington, Illinois, and a cultural competency consultant for the McLean County Museum of History.
