About Barrett Johnson

I am a J.D. Candidate at the University of Denver Sturm College of Law and will graduate this May. I am on track to graduate with a Certificate in Corporate and Commercial Law. I have also taken classes on trial advocacy, such as advanced civil procedure and trial practice. Outside of class, I am a Technical Editor for the Transportation Law Journal and a Staff Editor for the Denver Journal of International Law and Policy. I am a research assistant for the Colorado Evidence Courtroom Manual. I research newly published evidence cases and write excerpts on significant cases which are included in the Manual. Recently, I took over as the head research assistant and am in charge of giving assignments to the other research assistants. In May of 2023, I began interning for Hon. Judge Diego G. Hunt in the Colorado 1st Judicial District Court and have continued that internship up to the present day. In the 1st Judicial District, I draft orders ruling on motions as well as appeals from county court. I also assist Judge Hunt with court hearings and criminal docket, when necessary. In the spring of 2023, I was student-attorney in the Criminal Defense Clinic representing clients as authorized by the Legal Aid Dispensaries Act, gaining real-world litigation experience under the guidance of the Student Law Office’s supervising attorneys. In the summer of 2022, I was a Legal Intern for the City Attorney's Office of Commerce City, Colorado. I worked directly under the Acting City Attorney and provided research memoranda on any area of municipal, state, or federal law to help advise city officials on matters of civil law. Before law school, I went to Purdue University and graduated in four years with a double major (Economics and History) and a quadruple minor (Political Science, Human Rights, Anthropology, and Native American and Indigenous Studies). During undergrad, I spent a semester in the United Kingdom studying policy at the London School of Economics and Political Science and interning in the British Parliament as a Hansard Society Scholar. I interned for the Plaid Cymru Members of Parliament in the House of Commons and worked directly under the Head of Research drafting briefs, official motions, speeches, articles and more for the MPs. In the summer of 2020 just before law school, I interned for a criminal defense attorney. Most notably, I created an interactive system using excel for filing closed cases that allows for client search and automatically renders case statistics such as number of dismissals, which the firm still uses several years later.
