About Barry Michael

I have over 36 years of experience in many different areas of law enforcement. I served as a patrol officer; an investigator in the Violent Crimes Unit; a Sergeant in Patrol Division and Metro Narcotics Unit; a Lieutenant/Unit Commander over the Metro Narcotics Division; and Captain over Special Operations. My current assignment is Deputy Chief of Police for the last nine years. While in the Violent Crimes Unit, I developed the Crime Scene Technicians training program. I have spoken at many public events, civic events, and church/youth events on the subject of drug awareness and have taught numerous courses on Drug Awareness, Clandestine Meth Lab Safety and Awareness, Clandestine Laboratory Safety Recertification, Drug Endangered Children and Crime Scene Investigations. In addition to my regular duties, I also served as a hostage/crisis negotiator for 15 years, 6 of which I was Team Leader. I was a charter member on the Executive Board for The Tennessee Alliance for Drug Endangered Children and served as the West Tennessee Regional Director of the Tennessee Meth Task Force. I am an Adjunct Instructor for Bethel University, the University of Memphis, and the University of Tennessee at Martin. I have instructed courses in Forensic Sciences, Victimology, Crime Control Strategies, Principles of Law Enforcement, Principles of Corrections, Crime & Public Policy, Criminal Evidence, and Law Enforcement Administration. I have been married for 35 years and have four boys. I am a member of Northside United Methodist Church and a member of the Jackson Exchange Club.
