I am the communications director for a Democratic member of Congress. Before working on The Hill, I spent 35 years at daily newspapers, mainly writing daily, breaking-news stories on deadline and weekend newsfeatures. I was pretty versatile: I've covered rural Pennsylvania borough council meetings, lengthy murder and public corruption trials in Tennessee, Mississippi and Arkansas, and complex U.S. Supreme Court oral arguments; ridden on elephant back stalking tigers in India and on airboats catching alligators in the Everglades; and handled pool duty for a papal visit and at the White House every month for nine years. I've written profiles on saints, sinners, wise men, killers and frauds. As a regional reporter in D.C, I didn't typically cover the news of the day or travel in packs to catch sound bites. I liked to take readers to places they'd never see and describe encounters they were never likely to have - focusing on the real forces behind public policies and their impact - while providing precise but irrelevant detail.
