About Basheer Abdullah

Basheer Abdullah is a four-time U.S. Olympic boxing coach who has earned a host of accolades in the course of his career, including serving as head coach to the 2004 Olympic Men’s boxing team where Andre Ward garnered a gold medal at the Games in Athens, Greece. He led the Women’s boxing team as they made their groundbreaking debut at the 2012 Olympic Games in London. Under Basheer’s supervision, 17-year-old Claressa Shields was awarded the historic first gold medal for women’s boxing in the middle weight class. Basheer’s immense achievements with USA Boxing also comprise of coaching the Men’s World team to victory with four gold medals at the Men World Championships in and leading the Women’s team at the 2012 World Championship where they earned an impressive five medals. He was named USA Boxing’s “Coach of the Year” in 2002 and 2004 and “Developmental Coach of the Year” in Basheer was inducted to the St. Louis Sports Hall of Fame for his achievements as coach and a community mentor in 2007.
