About Basil Ell

I am a postdoctoral researcher at the Center of Excellence Cognitive Interaction Technology (CITEC) at Bielefeld University (Bielefeld, Germany) since May 2016 and researcher at SIRIUS labs in Oslo, Norway since September 2018. At SIRIUS I lead the domain-adapted data science program. To learn about our ambitions an achievements see the SIRIUS annual report 2021, pp. 22-26: https://sirius-labs.no/wp-content/uploads/2022/05/Sirius-Arsrapport-2021_FINAL_lowres_single-pages-1.pdf I am interested in the Semantic Web and Natural Language Processing in general and in particular in graph pattern mining, association rules, knowledge base population, semantic parsing, and information extraction from text (relation extraction) and tables (table understanding). I obtained a Ph.D from Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) in 2015 in the areas of Semantic Web and Natural Language Processing. In detail, I explored how Virtual Research Environments based on Semantic Web technologies support research interactions with RDF data in various stages of corpus-based analysis, I analyzed the Web of Data in terms of human readability, derived labels from variables in SPARQL queries, applied Natural Language Generation to improve user interfaces to the Web of Data by verbalizing SPARQL queries and RDF graphs, and developed a method to automatically induce RDF graph verbalization templates via distant supervision.
