About Basil Ribeiro
Since medical school, he has been very involved in the organization of sports events. He was responsible for the Sports Department of the Student Association. Among his activities, he created a rugby team that competed at a national level in the 2nd division and once qualified for the 1st division. After graduating from medical school, he organized medical meetings about sports medicine. The biggest one was the European Sports Medicine Congress of FIMS (1997). He was an invited instructor at a local university: Physical Education and Sports, teaching sports physiology. As a professional, he worked at a local central hospital (Emergency Department – Orthopedics) and as a team doctor for several clubs and national federations (track and field, basketball, football) and various sports (basketball, cycling, football, rugby, track and field). Medical emergencies are one of his passions. Besides working in the hospital emergency room, he worked part-time for 9.5 years in pre-hospital emergency care (National Institute of Medical Emergency, and Runporto). One of the most exciting activities was working with FIFA as a doping control officer for almost 10 years. He was head of the Medical Department of the National Federation of Basketball for 2 seasons, and he also held some responsibilities within the Portuguese Federation of Track and Field: he was an assistant director and served as team doctor at the World Championship of Track and Field in Athens, Greece, 1997. He was the the team doctor for the National Beach Soccer Team (Portuguese Football Federation), which became European Champion (2024, September) and qualified for the World Cup (FIFA) to be held in 2025. He has had two experiences in Saudi Arabia (Al Nassr FC, Al Ettifaq FC), where he had the opportunity to win two Super Cups in football, as well as building friendships in Saudi Arabia. In 2010, he created the sports medicine magazine: Revista de Medicina Desportiva Informa, and soon after, the website (https://revdesportiva.pt) and the apps. Published every two months, it was delivered free by mail to about doctors. Until November 2024, 60 issues were delivered. Besides being a doctor and a writer, he has held responsibilities in several sports medicine organisations, serving on their boards: Portuguese Order of Doctors (College of Sports Medicine) Portuguese Society of Sports Medicine Portuguese Society of Arthroscopy and Sports Traumatology Portuguese Association of Team Physicians Portuguese Association for Osteoporosis.
