About Becky Devonshire-Pay

Currently for my professional experience year at The University of Manchester, I am a volunteer mentor for City Year UK, an education charity which strives to support young people furthest from opportunity. 4 days a week, I volunteer in a secondary school in the North West, where I mentor and offer near-peer support for Year 11. Seeing the development of my 10 focus list students and the rest of the year group is such a privilege every day. I plan and deliver sessions with my focus list in a check in, check out style, and also help them with extra tasks such as homework, revision, and being in their lessons to ensure they achieve their excellence. I focus on their ABCD: attendance, curriculum, behaviour and development.On a Friday, City Year focus on providing its volunteers with learning and development, which has so far included sessions such as misogyny workshops, heart start training and public speaking. I also work alongside a bridge-builder from DHL who helps me to work on my own professional development.As well as this, I am the co-editor in chief at The Tab Manchester, which is a student news site. We publish student news, features and opinion, as well as creating social media content for TikTok and Instagram. This has allowed me to develop my writing and editing skills, editing the teams pieces and creating content alongside it. We cover and publish much student news, recently including the establishment of a Pro-Life society at UoM. I covered 3 articles for this, and got to speak to students about their opinion
