Background
About Belle Selkirk
I am an Noongar woman from the South-West of Western Australia. I am connected to my culture through my grandmother (L.Hume), who has been a strong role model in my life. I grew up on Wadandi Boodja (country) as a child, then relocated to Boorloo, Whadjuk Boodja (Perth) as a young adult to study psychology. In 2007 I was privileged to be the inaugural recipient of the APS Bendi Lango Bursary for postgraduate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander psychology students. I successfully completed my Master of Clinical Psychology in late 2008 and my thesis examined the outcomes of a school-based resilience program for Aboriginal primary school students. Psychotherapy, social and emotional wellbeing, trauma-informed and culturally-informed clinical care are my passions. I now have over 15 years’ experience working in the mental health field in a variety of roles including Clinical Psychologist/Psychologist, Group Therapist, researcher, and mentor. As an Aboriginal Psychologist, I take a two-eyed seeing approach, blending different therapeutic interventions to best meet the needs of the people I work with. I have expertise in working with holistic culturally-informed approaches grounded in Indigenous ways of knowing, being and doing. Additionally, I have sound knowledge and experience in cognitive-behaviour therapy, dialectical-behaviour therapy, mindfulness and sensorimotor interventions, schema focused therapy, and EMDR. I have extensive experience in providing both short- and long-term psychotherapy, with a particular focus on social and emotional wellbeing, complex trauma, anxiety, depression, suicide prevention and suicide bereavement.I juggle my time between family, being a mother, private psychology practice, and Research Fellow with the Transforming Indigenous Mental Health & Wellbeing (TIMHWH) project.
