Background
About Ben C.
MSc Global Health Policy, LSHTM. BSc Medical Sciences, University of Edinburgh. Taught English as a foreign language abroad in China for several years. Variety of professional experience, from writing news articles and proofreading to developing LLMs. Looking to improve health through policy and communication. On my BSc, I studied quantitative, scientific techniques to assess health. I undertook a systematic review and meta-analysis on the effect of anaesthetic on neonates. The degree also introduced me to the determinants of health and analysis of health policies. I was fascinated by wider health issues, and began a distance-learning degree in Global Health Policy to look at health issues from the widest possible perspectives. Through my MSc, I've studied policy advocacy, political science, economics, law and the interactions between environmental change and health at global, state and local levels. I've written a policy brief, analysed power and taken critical looks at global structures and institutions affecting global health. I was especially interested in issues of environmental change such as biodiversity loss and climate change and their effects on health and equity. I'm also a CELTA-trained teacher and I've taught English to students of all ages, abilities and backgrounds. I learned how to communicate science during my BSc and these skills gave me the confidence to become an English teacher so I could travel the world. I taught myself Chinese, took on various part-time jobs and started my MSc in Global Health Policy as I progressed in my teaching career in China. I'm currently undertaking a qualitative research project looking at how different values and valuation methods of nature can affect policy outcomes for health, largely inspired by the work of IPBES, an intergovernmental body that looks at nature's contributions to health. I'm building up my knowledge on complex systems, environmental health policy, GIS and social science research methods.
