About Ben Khoo

Former published Microbiology researcher with a Pre-Med academic background, coupled with expertise in lab research, turned public school Educator with excellence in teaching pedagogy, and a strong track record of student achievement on standardized tests (STAAR Biology and AP Biology). I have been teaching since Jan 2014; beginning with Geometry, before establishing my expertise in teaching Science. I was the 2021 Secondary District Teacher of the Year, having shown a sustained record of improving student scores, supporting students with learning accommodations, fostering student engagement in academic honour societies, and increasing student matriculation into post-secondary colleges/universities/trade schools. At the root of it all, I take the greatest pride in preparing my students well, so that they have a smooth transition towards college education. This fosters an increase in retention rates among undergraduate students, and ensures a higher graduation rate at the end of the tertiary education cycle. My greatest strengths as a teacher/instructor are:(a) an ability to take a very complicated concept, and explain it in many different ways so that all learners can understand the material successfully;(b) being able to motivate reluctant learners to accomplish the goals that are set in front of them; and (c) to use my research background to evaluate student performance by generating meaningful data of statistical relevance, which is then used to drive meaningful instruction towards greater success with inclusivity. My strong foundation as a restaurant manager (>10 yrs) while completing my college degree molded me into a self-initiator with excellent problem-solving skills. This experience of management and problem-solving gave me a wide array of skills that are translatable into a broad spectrum of the job field. As such, it doesn't take long for any professional team lead/manager to realize the value-added qualities that I bring to the team, with a strong work ethic and dedication to quality work as my base foundation.
