About Ben Kuttner

Dr. Kuttner holds an undergraduate degree in Forest Resource Management (B.Sc.F. from the University of New Brunswick, and a Master’s of Science in Forestry (M.Sc.F. 2002) and Ph.D.(2010) in Forestry from the University of Toronto. Ben’s Ph.D. research focused on describing the structural complexity of old growth Boreal forests in northeastern Ontario and developing multi-cohort forest structural classification systems using novel ground based approaches and airborne laser scanner light detection and ranging (ALS LiDAR) data. Ben later held a MITACS Elevate Postdoctoral Fellowship (2010-2012) to extend his Ph.D. research and a second Postdoctoral Fellowship 2014-2015 to research biochar as a soil amendment for ecological restoration projects. Ben became an R.P.F. in Ontario in 2001, established Kuttner Forestry Consulting in 2003, and founded ArvorEnergy Corp in 2013. He has over 15 years professional experience as a forestry consultant on a wide array of projects for government, industry, and ENGO clients; including environmental audits, wood supply analyses, canopy cover assessments, program reviews, jurisdictional scans, policy development, market analysis and authoring forest management plans and reports; among other projects. Dr. Kuttner has also developed and delivered online courses in Forestry as part of the U of T Faculty of Forestry 's Professional Development Program. Working in partnership with Faculty of Forestry and the Canadian Institute of Forestry 2015-16 Dr. Kuttner developed a suite of 14 new online courses focused on the competencies required of professional foresters for the Ontario Professional Foresters Association. These courses are now being offered as part of the new Ontario Bridge Training Program for Foresters; Dr. Kuttner acts as Instructor for the program.
