Background

About Ben Moran

I started as a postdoctoral researcher in the Bay Lab at UC Davis in July 2025, supported by a Schmidt Science Fellowship. My postdoc will focus on the application of novel methods to the population genomics of the table coral Acropora hyacinthus, revealing cryptic lineages across the Pacific, local adaptation to temperature, and likely outcomes for the species' evolution in response to climate change. Previously, I received my PhD from the Biology Department (Ecology and Evolution track) at Stanford University, and a BS in Marine Biology from Northeastern University's Marine and Environmental Science Department. My primary focus is on evolutionary genomics, molecular ecology, and their application to conservation, but I have broad, hands-on experience across many biological disciplines. In the long term, I hope to make a career balancing basic eco-evolutionary research and education, elucidating and sharing the mechanisms by which biological diversity is created and maintained.
