About Benjamin Blakely

Growing up, my passion was always in sports, even though I have cheered on two teams with playoff droughts in the Buffalo Bills and Sabres. But I was always fascinated with the inside life of the players and the personalities I grew up enjoying. And it all started with my first publication at the Sun and Record Times in Williamson, N.Y. in 2017.Since then, I have followed my passion for sports by graduating from SUNY Brockport in May 2021 with a bachelor's in Journalism and Broadcasting. While there, I joined the sports department at their on-campus radio station, 89.1 The Point, and had great success. I broadcasted over 20 high school and collegiate sporting events, including four NCAA Championship sanctioned events and a Section VI Football championship game from Highmark Stadium in two years.This experience, alongside my experience at Roberts Wesleyan College, has allowed me to tell stories about cinderella teams and others who may not get the coverage they deserve. Through these experiences, I have earned multiple New York State Broadcasters Awards for my reporting and national recognition from the Broadcast Education Association. It has taken me some time to figure out what I want to do since the Coronavirus pandemic through a monkey wrench in my plans. But I know that I want to use a multimedia-first approach in sports reporting to potentially bring a fresh perspective where it is not always about the favorite. It can also be about the little guy and the players/coaches that make up that program.
