Background
About Benjamin Fabian
I have 17 years of classroom experience as a social studies educator. I began my career at Virginia Randolph Community High School, where I taught World History I, US/VA History, and US/VA Government for five years. Virginia Randolph (now the Academy at Virginia Randolph) is a title I alternative program specializing in helping students who need something other than a traditional educational experience. In 2010, I transferred to Douglas Freeman High School, and have taught there ever since. My course load has included World History I, Honors World History I, Honors World History II, Economics and Personal Finance, College Prep US/VA Government, Honors US/VA Government, and AP US Government and Politics. In 2006, I was awarded the New Teacher of the Year award at VRCHS. In 2015, I was awarded a Henrico 21 Award alongside a colleague of mine for a project of our joint design. In 2018, I was awarded the Gilman Award for Teacher of the Year at Douglas Freeman and was a runner-up for the Henrico County Gilman Award. In 2018 I was also named a Senior James Madison Memorial Fellow for the state of Virginia. For the past seven years, I have participated in the We the People program in my government classes, and for the past two years I have been a We the People mentor teacher for the state of Virginia. I have also served as a judge and facilitator for the state and national competitions at both the high school and middle school level. I served from August 2007 to November 2016 in the U.S. Coast Guard Reserve, where I served as a pollution investigator, facility inspector, and container inspector. I attained the rank of E6 (MST1) and was activated for the Haiti earthquake response and the Deepwater Horizon oil spill response. I was awarded the Commandant's Letter of Commendation Medal for my service during the Deepwater Horizon response. In August 2021 I completed a second masters degree, a Master of Arts in American History and Government from Ashland University.
