About Benjamin Heidt

I’m a Technology Licensing Specialist at OIST Innovation, where I help protect, promote, and license intellectual property from the Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology. My work focuses on IP strategy, startup support, innovation pipeline development, and industry collaboration. I hold a PhD in Chemical and Biological Biosensing from Maastricht University, where I worked on functional surfaces for pathogen detection, additive manufacturing, and microfluidics. I also hold a B.Sc. in Biochemistry and an M.Sc. in Applied Life Sciences. Earlier in my career, I earned an associate degree in management and foreign trade and worked in sales. I’ve added certifications in data science where I use tools like Python, R, and SQL for data-driven decision making as well as project management, with extensive expertise in agile project management and tools like Jira and Salesforce. During my PhD, I founded Flui.Go Science, a startup that transformed modular microfluidic devices into an award-winning educational kit—bridging prototyping and classroom learning. My interests span biosensing, diagnostics, synthetic biology, materials science, and biotech. I’m particularly drawn to the point where science meets market reality—especially in tech transfer, valuation, and de-risking strategies.
