Background

About Benjamin Reuter

Benjamin is a professor for energy systems and energy economics at Stuttgart University for Applied Sciences mainly related to infrastructure management. In this role he is teaching and researching the variety of energy topics, both conventional and renewable, bringing together energy production, distribution and use for the applications in the domestic domain, for industry and for mobility. Within the department for "Business Solutions E-Mobility" at Daimler Trucks, Benjamin was dedicated to the public charging and hydrogen refuelling infrastructure for future Zero Emission trucks. This means working together with infrastructure players and connecting the vehicle with the infrastructrue side. His work includes a variety of operational and strategic aspects along the E2E hydrogen supply chain including business development for future truck deployment. As Consultant in the team for “Energy and Mobility” at thinkstep his work addressed all types of future vehicle concepts and integrated energy solutions. It emphasized the use of batteries and alternative fuels for innovative powertrain technologies and as stationary energy storage system. Often, the target of his activities was the assessment and use of synergies arising from linking the mobility and energy sector and the related improvements with respect to reduced energy consumption and emissions. In his PhD thesis he developed a methodology for assessing sustainability aspects and the influences from using certain materials and technologies in electric vehicles. Using several different approaches (i.e. life cycle assessment, material flow analysis, life cycle costing, the criticality of resources, and social life cycle assessment) provided a very holistic analysis. The thesis assesses the use of steel, aluminium, and fibre-reinforced plastics as car body materials, two different types of lithium ion batteries, and motors with and without rare earth magnets in battery electric vehicles. He holds a full degree (Dipl-Ing.) in energy technologies and process engineering from Technische Universität München (TUM) and through his participation in a double-degree programme also from Universidad Politécnica de Madrid (ingeniero industrial - ETSII/UPM). He’s gathered further international work experience during his seven month stay with TUM-CREATE in Singapore or during the four month stay in South India related to his final study thesis.
